After the success of the first joint development of the Telstar/626, Ford and Mazda continued with a new model, which also proved to be a success. The GD model was the third generation Mazda 626 (fourth generation Mazda Capella) and was released in Australia in October 1987. The station wagon was released on the slightly modified GV platform in May 1988. The GD was facelifted from January 1990. The GD 626 model was replaced by the stylish GE 626 in January 1992. The GV wagon remained in production alongside the GE 626.

The AT Ford Telstar was also released in October 1987 in sedan and TX5 hatchback forms, continuing to be mechanically identically and cosmetically similar to its Mazda 626 brother. The AT Ford Telstar sedan was discontinued in October 1989, the gap filled in by the Ford Corsair (a rebadged Nissan Pintara). However the Telstar TX5 hatchback continued with the AV facelift being introduced in January 1990. The AV Telstar was replaced by the stylish AX model in Australia in January 1992.
