The third-generation TE Mitsubishi Magna was released in April 1996. Broadly based on the second-generation Mitsubishi Diamante, the model was larger than the outgoing TS model. The upmarket Verada model continued with the KE series released in July 1996 replacing the KS model. The TE Magna wagon was released in March 1997 replacing the TS model. Initially available in Executive and Altera (replacing the SE), the Advance and Altera LS (equivalent of Elite) model were released in October 1996. The base GLX model was discontiued with the TS model.

The model introduced a brand new 4 cylinder, the imported 2.4L Sirius engine replacing the outdated Astron II engine that had served the Magna since its introduction in 1985. The 3.0L Cylcone V6 engine was upgraded and built in Australia . Also introduced was the 3.5L V6 Cyclone engine for the Verada model. The TE/KE series was replaced by the TF/KF series in June 1997.
