October
1978 - August 1988
The first generation
Holden Commodore began with the VB, introduced in October 1978.
Taking over from the larger Holden Kingswood, it was based on
an Opel designed platform, taking components from the Rekord
(rear) and Senator (front). Initially relased as a 4-door sedan,
two wagon models joined the line-up in June 1979The VC Commodore
was released in March 1980 as a small facelift, with the VB
already Australia's top selling car. The VH Commodore, launched
in September 1981, was a move away from the models Opel beginnings
with an Australian design. The fourth model, the VK Commodore
was a major facelift introduced in February 1984. The VL Commodore
released in February 1986 was the last of the first generation
Commodores but was the most extensive facelift to date with
significant mechanical updates including the Nissan V6. The
VL was replaced by the bigger VN Commodore in August 1988.
