September 1960
- September 1966
The XK Ford Falcon
was the first Ford Falcon model. The first XK Ford Falcon was
built in Australia on 28 June 1960 and on sale on 11 September
1960 to combat the popular yet dated Holden FB. Although built
in Australia the XK was largely a clone of the US Ford Falcon.
The XL Ford Falcon was the first facelift, released on 4 August
1962, before its US counterpart, with a different grille and
roofline. The XM facelift released on 20 February 1964 improved
the model, though it was the XP Ford Falcon released
on 20 February 1965 that was the best and brought success for
the Falcon in Australia with the model accounting for 10% of
passenger car sales. The XP was replaced by the second-generation
XR Ford Falcon in September 1966.

The first generation was used in
early Australian motorsport. Notably a XL Ford Falcon 170 Pursuit
at the hands of Harry Firth and Bob Jane won the Armstrong 500
around Phillip Island in 1962, the premier race in Australia
at the time prior to Bathurst. The three of the first four places
of the race were XL Ford Falcons.
Although not an actual race, Ford
Australia ran the Falcon Mobil 70,000 mile Durability Run marketing
campaign where they ran several XP Ford Falcons around its You
Yang test track for 70,000 miles straight to show how durable
to new model was.
