The second generation Australian-built XR Ford Falcon was introduced in September 1966 and was still based on the American model and brought bigger bodies and V8 engines to the namplate. The XR Ford Falcon also introduced the most revered Falcon model, the GT. The ZA Ford Fairlane was released in March 1967 and was a unique Australian model (as opposed to its American namesake) based on the XR Ford Falcon. Designed in Australia to replace the US-sourced Fairlane, the model had a longer wheelbase and attracted the luxury market buyer. The XT Ford Falcon and ZB Ford Fairlane were a mild facelift, released on April 1968 and March 1968 respectively. The XW Ford Falcon released in June 1969 was a major facelift of the shape and unique Australian design, along with the facelifted ZC Ford Fairlane. The final version of the second generation was the XY Ford Falcon and ZD Ford Fairlane released in November 1970. The XY proved to be a popular model, with the XY Ford Falcon GT-HO Phase III proving to be the world's fastest four door sedan at the time and now the most sought after Falcon of all time. The XY was replaced by the third-generation XA Ford Falcon in February 1972.

Four-Wheel Drive Utility: This model came about as a new model idea from the Ford Brisbane production facility. As Ford sold engines to Jeep to amke the CJ5 Jeep in Brisbane, it was thought that the Jeep running gear could be put into a Falcon. The model idea came about late into the XY Falcon production cycle, and 432 bodies were built and stored at the Brisbane plant. A unique axle was reuired for the model and the ordering and delivery of the part took a year, meaning the utes were built as XY's a year into the XA Ford Falcon's model run.
